World Congress of Applied Linguistics, Kuala Lumpur, Malayasia, 2024

At AILA World Congress marking 60 years of AILA, which was attended by 1700 academics from 69 countries, Dina presented her paper: Language hierarchies in the 21st century: Contradictions of global success versus marginalisation of one’s national languge, which is building on the exploration of language hierarchies in her previously published paper: Engaging with Linguistic Diversity in Global Cities: Arguing for ‘Language Hierarchy Free’ Policy and Practice in Education available on this link.

There was a lot of interest in the topic and a rich discussion.

Dina’s latest work exploring language hierarchies further and introducing two new concepts will be coming out shortly:

Mehmedbegovic-Smith, D Parents as the agents of Imported Bilingualism’: Arguing for two new concepts needed to further develop typology of bilingual families, Zagreber Germanistische Beiträge – ZGB 33 (2024) Mehsprachigkeit im Bildungskontext eds. Marijana KresicVukosav & Irena Horvatic Bilic (forthcoming)
